Ideas copied from Chocolate Insanity forum spread faster
Chocolate Insanity was one of the first forums to pop up after i opened The Sim Vibe, starting with 14 new members in their first week the forum looked promising.
I don’t know alot about the forum right now, since i barely visit any forums these days, but for me, Nick (the admin of this forum) was always a creative a guy who aspired to make his forum interesting and member appealing.
I’d talk about the forum in general, but i’d like to touch an interesting point which is unique to this forum: the ideas originally formed there are simply spreading accross other forums like hell!
Now this might sound as a compliment, and it is, but it is more of a concern for Creativity’s sake in forums, and to Nicks’ forum specifically.
Before you continue reading, Disclaimer: Allen Heat is not reffering to anyone specific, but he’s talking about the phenomenon in general, if you feel offended, you may kiss his ass. Allen Heat did not talk to Nick or to any of the CI Forum supervisors before this article was written, therefore, he claims latitude for everything mentioned in this article.
A fine example is Nicks’ Picture of the week and quote of the week. In times i was visiting forums daily, CI Chocolate Insanity was the first forum to contain this feature…Today, almost every forum i visit, i see this idea, Everywhere!
Now i know some of these admins asked Nick for permission, but….i can assure that more than 90% don’t even give a shit if it was Nicks’ or Bill Clintons’ idea, they want it, they take it…just like that!
—-
Not that it’s only hurting Nicks’ forum and its’ uniqueness, but it’s also a major concern regarding forum features innovations, if admins will continue to adopt the copying easy way, they will find themselves surfing the same forums with different admins soon, and of course, all of them will have to share the same amount of members.[now read that one more time, please]
I’d actually like to hear what other forum admins have to say, especially Nick.
Thank you,
A.H

This is a great article, it actually madee me feel guilty for actually using some of other people’s ideas, that it makes me think that is my forum really worth keeping up if it’s considered ‘not unique’

Nick may be the inventer of Pic of the Week for forums.. but Pixel2Life was the first I’ve seen have it for a site.

@ Natalie: that was certainly not the goal behind the article, every forum that is being taken care of is worth keeping up, adn yours is. i was talking about one specific problem with mostly all forums, i don’t want you to feel guilty by reading this article, the traget behind this article is a little bit of thought and creativity provocation
.
Purchase: As i said before, i talk about this close community that is pretty much admins that are/was members of Snootysims since we’re still in contact..Nick has certainly brought a good feature to forums, that’s for sure.

Heh, thanks Heat. I noticed that too. It’s really annoying when they don’t ask me, and then when I ask them about it their response:
“Ahhh…..omfg i liek totahlay have no ideuh waht ur talkin about!!!!111″
I hate it. But, that’s life. And that makes my ideas seem less original.
@Purchase: What’s that? It may have been used before, but I didn’t copy it, others copied it from me.
Also guys, when people do that, it hurts the forum you’re copying from, though you really don’t care. lol.Like I’ve tried to come up with new idea. I’ve only gotten one new one recently…Quiz of the day. A question is asked abnnd the first member to answer it wins……no prizes guys.
and I’d appreciate it if at least most people wouldn’tmcopy this one either,or else my forum is screwed, because I’m fresh out of ideas, so there probably won’t be much to copy after that. lol

What made Nick’s “picture of the week” special is the fact that he put it on the index, his is the first forum (in our community) that I’ve seen do that. I am very angry that other forums copied that detail, I’ve even told a few admins this already…
I am getting tired of all this stealing. Recently people have started to steal my forum graphics…
Thanks for saying something Heat, someone had to.

@Nick: No Problems dude, i don’t even think you should thank me, i wasn’t doing this for Chocolate Insanity, really! i’m doing this for the sake of creativity and forums-future.
Shadow: I’d actually like to make a point here, it is important to me personally to emphasize that i actually mean copying and not stealing, those people aren’t doing something legally prohibited, but i do look at it as an unethical manner. When it comes to forum graphics stealing, that’s another issue that does touch the illegal feild of the issue, therefore it is stealing.

Unfair judgement. How can you be EXACTLY, 100% sure that a particular forum “invented” a “feature”? (In this case, CI)
No offense, but I’ve seen this “Pic of the Day” in a Singapore forum in 2000, and it was hot then.
And it’s not necessary copying or stealing… don’t make it sound so ugly. Why don’t call it sharing?
Sharing ideas sound good to me

XPDude, I was talking about the specific community of admins that know each other around, particullary from Snooty Sims and Pink Imoen
And another thing, i’d actually like you to quote me saying that Nick Invented this feature, is that possible by reading the article? rhetorical question…
Ugly? i think it’s mostly sad, and it is copying, when one day after you’ve put a new feature and proud of it, and just the second day you see more than 20 forums having it, hell it is!
Besides that, i don’t think that one who has never owned a forum can really rate something like that, since it does contain emotions, and it’s alot of emotions when someone copies you, trust me.
Why didn’t i call it sharing? hmmm…cause i simply think copying is more fit for this kind of act.

Oh oops, I didn’t mean stealing as in illegal stealing. I meant the “stealing of ideas”, just the way I happened to put it…

Why donââ?¬â?¢t call it sharing? Because in sharing you actually get permission. I don’t mind when they ask me, but most don’t. And I’m not necessarily the inventor of the feature, I came up with it, but it’s proablybeen used, I was just the first one to come up with it without seeing it somewhere else in this community.
